Web Designing Involves More Than Knowledge of Design

As I've mentioned a number of my blogs, we never really know exactly what someone else's job truly involves - there are always many behind-the-scenes tasks that an unfamiliar person would never imagine going into another's work.
From everyone I've talked with about a career in web design, there is a lot more to the job than simply designing web pages.

I think this often depends on the company or organization one works with - often they are asked to perform many other tasks that are not necessarily specific to web design. Some of the most important elements of a career that I have gleaned from talking to co-workers and friends in the industry are listed below.

You Need the Right Education It is important to have the right education so you will be competitive when it comes time to find a good job. There are a lot of talented, basically self-taught designers out there, but with fierce competition, the better your credentials, the better your opportunities.
Learn all you can about graphic design and illustration; also some technical study in color theory and coding. It's Important to Have Great Communication Skills Work on developing good communication skills.
As a designer, you're going to have to communicate clearly with those you're working with to create a design that will meet a client's expectations.

You'll also need to be a team player who communicates effectively with copywriters, developers and programmers.

Work on Problem Solving Skills As a web designer, you need to be able to think through processes and see the whole picture. There will often be problems you will need to find a good solution for - you want your designs to be aesthetically pleasing and you also have to make sure the user experience will be positive in order for your design to be considered successful.
These are just a few thoughts on a career in web design.
If you're considering getting into web design as a career, do your research and find out where the best programs are.

If you possibly can, talk to people in the field to find out what it's really like. Once you do the work and get into the field of web design, you can't stop there! You've got to keep up with the times, trends and advances to remain at the top of your game.

This is one field that will continue to evolve along with emerging technology.
