I was walking home from school last year with my son, and he said to me 'What is a sperm?'. Oh no, I thought, I am sure I have explained all this before - how am I going to answer this??
By way of background, my son is at Junior School and has been studying World War 2.
On that particular day, they had been enjoying a special day looking at that topic.
They had all dressed up as evacuees, and people had come to school to talk to the children about what life was like during the war.
After this, they had all shared a wartime tea, with traditional foods that were eaten at the time.
Anyway, back to the awkward question.
I said to him 'Well, we have spoken about sperms before. You remember, they come from the man and need to go to the lady's egg to fertilize it.
That is how you get babies.
' He looked at me, with a very serious expression and said 'Oh yes, I know that - but what is a sperm sandwich?'.
I was very shocked, and unsure how to reply.
I said 'There is no such thing - you must have got that wrong!'.
I was a bit angry, and also worried that it was some strange sexual position that I had never heard of! What was the school teaching my child?? I really was lost for words.
Anyway, my son scratches his head, and looks at me and smiles.
'Perhaps' he said, 'it was a SPAM sandwich'.
The war, of course! Nowadays spam has a more sinister basis.
I was so relieved!
